St. Ann’s and St. Rita’s are two senior guilds that have devoted countless hours of service to Sacred Heart. These women helped set the standard for us all. They continue to support PCCW ministries with quiet but dedicated efforts. We are forever grateful for their guidance and leadership.
Sacred Heart has enjoyed a rich heritage with the PCCW. Here are a few highlights:
- 1952- The Our Lady of Fatima Society was organized to extend hospitality and develop friendships among Catholic women. This society was made up of individual guilds each dedicated to a saint. Our present system is still based on this original premise and we still have members from this founding society.
- 1956- This was a year of reorganization, as we became a parochial society devoted to study in accordance with the regulations of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. This was done at the request of Father Edward Dolan, our first Pastor. The thirteen guilds took on new responsibilities that included altar duty, Saturday liturgy and Coffee at Eastern State Hospital.
- 1974- We became affiliated with the Knoxville Deanery of the Nashville Diocesan council of Catholic women. We adopted the commission format as used by the National Council of Catholic Women. We still use that format today. We continued to respond to parish and community needs.
- 1988- The Diocese of Knoxville was formed we were honored to be involved in many of the activities related to the formation of our new diocese. Since Sacred Heart was designated as the Cathedral, the support functions and hospitality of the PCCW took on a new importance. We are still proud to be the “welcoming and hosting committee” as needed for deanery and diocesan events.
- 1991- We were officially called the Sacred Heart Parish Council of Catholic Women in compliance with the guidelines set forth by the National Council of Catholic Women. We had ten active guilds. Religious study is an integral part of the meetings. In addition to parish activities, members continued to respond to community and international needs.
- 2006- We officially became a voting part of the Sacred Heart Parish Pastoral Council.
We have 7 guilds with members who are active not only here at Sacred Heart, but in the community as well.
